About Larry Nguyen

I grew up around music. Both my parents sang in the church choir, so it was always around the house. They came to the US as Vietnamese refugees with nothing after the war and started over, and music was part of how they got through it. When I was 15, a cousin talked me into buying a guitar, but it turned out to be way harder than I expected. So at 16, I gave up on the guitar and sat down at the piano nobody in the house ever played. I taught myself off the internet for a while, then took classical lessons for about two years.

Once the lessons stopped, I just kept playing by ear. I'd work out songs from the radio by trial and error, mess around, improvise, and make up little songs I never bothered to write down. In college, I came back to it in a more formal way, took some music theory classes, and ended up with a music minor. Honestly, I still didn't think I'd ever do anything with it, and for long stretches of my adult life, I didn't.

Then everything kind of fell apart in the span of a month. My girlfriend of two years ended things. A week later, I got a phone call that my dad was sick and I needed to fly out to see him. Three weeks after that, he passed away in the hospital.

Music became the way I got through it. When I went looking for someone to teach me how to produce, nobody took me seriously, even when I offered to pay them. So I found a mentor online, learned how to produce, and started putting the songs out. They're an honest record of grief and healing, not some persona I made up. Just moody, intimate pop and R&B, the kind of thing you put on late at night, all written and produced by me, for anyone who needs something real to feel when it's late.
